See the Path: Mentorship in Medicine for Indigenous Students
Career paths are often born out of early positive exposure. But what happens when the exposure isn’t necessarily positive or even existent? Many Indigenous communities in Canada lack access to permanent physicians with impacts to the social, physical and emotional wellbeing of the community. Due to the legacy of residential schools and ongoing systemic racism, many Indigenous students do not necessarily have positive associations or opportunities to learn about the profession. See The Path is a virtual mentorship program pairing doctors in various specialties with Indigenous high school students through an informal, friendly, “come as you are”, format to reduce some of those barriers to knowing about healthcare careers and allow students to ask questions about med school, the life of a doctor and small steps they can take now to help them get there.
